In Ayurveda, you always begin by caring for your imbalanced dosha, called Vikruti  (VICK-roo-tee) in Sanskrit. Typically, the dosha that is the most likely to go out of balance is your predominant dosha, known as your Prakruti (PRAHK-roo-tee). Vikriti in ayurveda should be studied well. Dosha and Vikriti represent the proper functioning of body.

An imbalance in your primary dosha is the ultimate way of bringing you back to the balance. It is the easiest way to do that. However, that doesn’t mean that it works like this way every time; you can be imbalanced in any one of the three doshas, you are simply most likely to be imbalanced in your primary dosha. If your non-primary dosha is imbalanced, it becomes more challenging to bring yourself back into balance. Vikriti in Ayurveda reveals a lot about your body.

Diagnosis in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda, the concept of diagnosis stems out of the belief that the body is constantly interacting between order and disorder in a balanced way; and diagnosis is the idea of constantly monitoring these interactions from moment-to-moment basis. Thus, diagnosis in Ayurveda is different from the concept of diagnosis in Western medicine, where the disease is identified after it presents in the body.

The disease process is a reaction between the body humors, tridoshas and the dhatus or tissues. The symptoms of every disease are always closely associated to the nature of imbalance among the tridoshas. Once this imbalance is recognized, then balance can be re-established through Ayurvedic treatment and management.

Factors Influencing Diagnosis of Diseases

Diagnosis related decision making in Ayurveda is very critical, complex and depends on evaluation of many internal factors that present themselves during a disease process, as follows:

  • Body humors (Tridoshas)
  • Body tissues (dhatus)
  • Excretory products (malas)
  • Digestive power (agni)
  • Body channels (srotas)

Dosha and Vikriti

Vata, Pitta and Kapha are positive and vital forces in the body but, due to environmental, emotional or physical conditions or stresses, they can increase or, less often, reduce beyond what is appropriate for our constitution.Vitiated constitution may create imbalance in the body or mind. This imbalance, or Vikruti, triggers to form an environment that is more hospitable to disease than if the Prakruti (constitution) is balanced and healthy.

Prakruti and Vikruti

Understanding Prakruti and Vikruti, two basic armsof Ayurveda, is fundamental to our understanding of how Ayurveda can help us have a healthy life or how it can guide us in every aspect of our life. Prakruti is our nature, our “constitution”, with which we were born. While our Vikruti is our current state, it is often referred to as our “imbalance”.

Vikriti Prakriti are packed with specific proportions of the “Doshas”. The Doshas are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. They are derived from the five great elements, Space, Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. These are ancient concepts and may seem a bit esoteric, but we do find them represented in the scientific models of the different states of matter: gaseous, radiant, liquid, and solid. Both Prakruti and Vikruti are comprised of specific proportions of the “Doshas”. We need to find a well-maintained balance of these doshas in our body. More we take care of natural composition of our body, more joy and health we enjoy in life. Ayurveda lifestyle is meant to take you on the path of joyous and soulful living. Maintain a good balance in these doshas because an imbalance in them might lead to a growing underlying disease.

Vikriti in Ayurveda Explained

To know a person’s constitution, we have Vikriti in Ayurveda explained clearly. To understand Dosha and Vikriti, you should know how their body interacts or reacts. If a person knows their tendencies they can take the actions that keep their tendencies in check. A person who knows that they have a tendency to feel cold, he/she easily escapes from freezing temperatures by wearing more clothing or drinking warm beverages. To know your constitutional tendencies is to be empowered with enough knowledge required to create a nice balance in your life.

In Ayurveda, when we talk about the vikruti of a patient, we are referring to the current state of the three doshas and how they are expressing themselves in the body and mind. We often feel that we live in a less optimal environment than most of us deserve. Our vikruti helps us to understand the imbalances or symptoms that we are witnessing or experiencing. However, it should be understood that in an optimal environment, the vikruti and the prakruti are the same. In this state, tendencies exist in the body and the mind but they are not behaving themselves in a manner that is causing a disturbance.

An Ayurvedic practitioner should be consulted in detail. They tailor the therapies to address these imbalances. For example, if one is experiencing dryness in the system, then eating more soups, drinking warm teas, and adding demulcents may be the best-suited therapy to counteract the dryness. Listen to what your ayurvedic doctor says for absolute joyous living.

Conclusion

Ayurveda lifestyle matters as it brings a perfect balance in your body leading to a rejuvenating life. An important goal of Ayurveda is to understand a person’s vikruti and then understand what aspects of a person’s environment have contributed to the disturbance. Once these are known, the goal is to bring changes in the environment.
